Houston breaks ground on new South Central Patrol Station

Houston leaders broke ground July 9 on a new South Central Patrol Station at 1450 South Lockwood Drive, a project intended to give Houston police more room and better service in EaDo, Third Ward and the Texas Medical Center. Mayor John Whitmire joined HPD Chief J. Noe Diaz Jr. at the ceremony for the future station.

The new station is aimed at one of the city’s busiest patrol areas. South Central Division is responsible for District 10, generally south of US 59 and the Houston Ship Channel, east of Kirby, north of Old Spanish Trail and west of Terminal and Hughes streets. That stretch includes neighborhoods and institutions where police coverage can affect daily life quickly, from hospital traffic and student movement to homes, businesses and special events.

HPD’s current South Central Patrol station is listed at 2202 St. Emanuel, and the department’s patrol network still relies on a 24-hour citywide station system. The move to 1450 South Lockwood will replace or refurbish that footprint with a facility built around current policing needs.

By fall 2027, the refurbished facility will become the new home of HPD’s South Central Patrol Division. Until then, the question for the surrounding neighborhoods is whether the added space and centralized base can help officers work more efficiently in a part of Houston that regularly carries heavy city traffic and public activity.

The city’s 2026-2030 capital plan calls for funding to install emergency generators at HPD facilities across the city, including stations that operate 24/7, and most police department buildings run around the clock. HPD also tracks crime statistics by patrol division, including South Central Patrol Division.
