Howdy Homemade Ice Cream in Katy marks five-year run with farewell party

Howdy Homemade Ice Cream Katy will host a farewell celebration Wednesday, July 22, from 1 to 9 p.m. at its Katy Fwy shop before closing after five years in business. Social posts from the shop said it will no longer be operating at that location after July 22.

The closing will end a run that became known for more than cones and shakes. Click2Houston reported that the Katy shop spent five years serving ice cream while creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities, making it one of the more distinctive neighborhood businesses in western Harris County.

A Facebook post called the event the “grand finale of our amazing 5-year journey” and added, “This isn't goodbye-it's see you later.” The shop also said all menu items will be $5 during the event, and a car show is planned from 5 to 8 p.m., giving regulars one last reason to gather at the store.

Howdy Homemade Ice Cream’s Katy location opened in 2021, when Trae tha Truth’s shop brought the brand to 20920 Katy Fwy, Ste S, Katy, TX 77449. ABC13 Houston reported at the time that the Katy store employed adults with special needs, a mission that helped set the business apart in a crowded dessert market. The Howdy Homemade brand says it has been serving ice cream since 2015.

For many Katy families, the loss will be less about one more dessert counter and more about losing a familiar stop tied to birthdays, after-school treats and weekend outings. The shop also promoted catering and community events, which gave it a broader role than a typical ice cream parlor in one of Harris County’s fastest-growing corridors. Its farewell marks the end of a local gathering place as well as a small business run.
