Juvenile hospitalized after downtown Houston shooting near Discovery Green

A juvenile was hospitalized after gunfire erupted near Discovery Green, where Houston police say a fight between adult men spilled into a downtown crowd near Austin and Leeland Street. The shooting unfolded around 9:50 p.m. Saturday in one of downtown Houston’s most visible public spaces, an area that regularly draws families, workers, tourists and people heading to evening events.

Houston police said undercover officers were nearby when the confrontation turned violent. Lt. Pulido said, "As the fight was going on, the crowd was dispersing and an innocent person got shot," a description that shows how fast a street argument can become a bystander shooting in a packed entertainment district.

KPRC 2 Click2Houston reported that the juvenile was struck by gunfire during a fight among adults near Discovery Green. KHOU 11 News identified the scene as Austin Street near Leeland Street, while ABC13 Houston said the shooting happened during a large gathering near the park.

ABC13’s Facebook post later said two people were in custody after shots rang out near Discovery Green during a teen takeover event with more than 500 teenagers in attendance. That kind of crowd size turns the blocks around Discovery Green into a tight, fast-moving public space, where sidewalks, crosswalks and nearby gathering spots can fill quickly once an event lets out or a fight starts. For families heading downtown, the shooting is a stark reminder that the people most at risk in a crowded scene are not always the ones involved in the dispute.
