Man killed, another critically injured in northeast Houston shooting

A dominoes game outside a convenience store in northeast Houston ended with one man dead and another critically injured after gunfire erupted near 4902 Laura Koppe Road. Houston police said the shooting happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, in the 4900 block of Laura Koppe Road, and the City of Houston newsroom placed the scene at 4902 Laura Koppe Road at about 10:05 p.m.

Police identified the victims as a man in his 20s and a man in his 50s. One report said the younger man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the older man was shot in the face and remained in critical condition. ABC13 said officers were looking for at least two suspects, and Lt. Willkens said investigators found a large number of pistol casings at the scene, a detail that points to a fast burst of gunfire rather than a single shot.

The violence unfolded outside a convenience store, where people had been gathered around a dominoes game. That setting matters to northeast Houston residents because it was not a nightclub, a freeway ramp or a late-night bar fight, but an ordinary neighborhood stop that turned into a homicide scene in seconds. Investigators have not yet established a motive in the reporting surfaced here, leaving open whether the shooting grew out of a dispute, a targeted confrontation or a wider chaos among the group.

The Laura Koppe Road address has already shown up in earlier public-safety records. Houston police investigated a fatal shooting at 4902 Laura Koppe Road in June 2021, and a July 21 Citizen alert logged a disturbance with a weapon at 4901 Laura Koppe Rd. Those incidents do not answer what happened Wednesday night, but they show why neighbors on the corridor know the block as more than a routine retail strip.

Officials and community groups already have tools aimed at stopping this kind of violence before it spreads through a neighborhood gathering. Houston Police Department programs such as Keep Houston Safe and the Positive Interaction Program are built around police-community contact, while Crime Stoppers of Houston takes anonymous tips at 713-222-TIPS. Harris County Public Health’s Community Health and Violence Prevention Services, including the RISE program, uses credible messengers to interrupt tensions outside law enforcement, and the city’s One Safe Houston plan calls for focusing patrols on hot spots, nuisance locations and illegal firearms.
