Harris County clerk opens all 10 annexes for birth certificates Saturday

Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth will open all 10 annex locations Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the office’s Sixth Annual Back-to-School Birth Certificate Event. For the first time, every annex will take part, giving parents and guardians a one-day chance to secure a certified copy before school registration, sports physicals and after-school programs pile up.

The clerk’s July 23 announcement lands as Harris County families gather records for the start of classes, when a missing birth certificate can stall enrollment at the front desk. The Texas Education Agency says every school and district has its own enrollment process, and Disability Rights Texas lists a student’s birth certificate among the documents commonly requested for school enrollment in Texas. That makes the certificate one of the first papers many families need before a child can start school.

The birth certificate reaches far beyond the classroom. It is commonly used for a state ID or driver’s license later, for benefits applications and for other official transactions, which is why the county clerk’s office has kept the back-to-school push tied to a document families use again and again. A Harris County Precinct 2 promotional graphic showed a $23 fee per birth certificate.

Families who cannot make it Saturday still have another route. The Harris County Clerk’s Office launched an online ordering system for certified copies through VitalChek in April 2022, and the VitalChek ordering page lists the Harris County Clerk’s Office at 201 Caroline Street, Suite 330, Houston, with phone number 866-281-6860. For parents trying to finish registration before the first bell, the county’s Saturday window is the fastest in-person option on the calendar.
