Harris County Precinct 4 is bringing hurricane readiness lessons to eight community centers with free workshops run alongside Sewa International USA. The sessions cover how to build a hurricane kit, make a disaster plan and register with STEAR, the state registry that helps emergency responders identify people who may need help during a disaster.
The outreach is part of Commissioner Lesley Briones’ broader 2026 preparedness push, which includes four preparedness workshops, high-water vehicle demonstrations at more than 40 locations and the distribution of 340,000 hurricane preparedness booklets. Since 2023, the county has faced a hurricane, a derecho, tornadoes and other severe weather. The office is leaning on resident education, evacuation and storm-safety guidance, and community-center-based resources.

Precinct 4’s community centers have already served as refuge during recent storms. During Hurricane Beryl and the spring derecho, the precinct opened six community cooling centers, distributed food, water and ice, and served more than 25,000 families during recovery efforts. With 10 community centers across Precinct 4, the current workshop series is reaching most of the network, including Tracy Gee Community Center, Fonteno Senior Education Center, Glazier Senior Education Center and Freed Community Center.
Precinct 4’s hurricane-season guidance says the 2026 Atlantic season is forecast to bring 8 to 14 named storms through Nov. 30. The precinct also points residents to ReadyHarris and the precinct hotline for recovery resources.
Sewa International’s Houston chapter is one of its most active, with work in disaster relief and rebuilding, family services and volunteerism. The organization’s disaster support can include rescue-operation support, food and clothing drives, clean-up after flooding, housing-assistance case management and help applying for FEMA or other government aid.
