Harris County deputies arrested one suspect after a U-Haul pursuit tied to a burglary on the east side of the county, while a second suspect remained at large along the Katy Freeway corridor. The case left investigators still sorting out who was involved, what was taken and whether more stolen property is still unaccounted for.

The pursuit moved from the east side of Harris County toward the Katy Freeway, putting commuters and nearby neighborhoods in the path of another fast-moving burglary investigation. Deputies have not closed the case, and the outstanding suspect keeps the public-safety risk active for drivers using the freeway and feeder roads.

The latest incident comes after a deadly February 4 burglary case on the Katy Freeway feeder road near Witte Road, where police said three men broke into an AutoZone near Gessner Road, stole several car batteries and later crashed into a wall on the westbound feeder. That crash happened just after 3 a.m., about two miles from the store, and Houston Fire Department crews had to cut the driver from the wreckage. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other two occupants were hospitalized. Police said that crash was not a chase, but a search for the burglary suspects’ vehicle that ended at the wreck scene.

Harris County has also seen a separate January 5 pursuit that ran for about an hour and 15 minutes and ended near Little York on the Eastex Freeway. In that case, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the truck had struck about 10 vehicles before the pursuit began, and Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified the suspect as 53-year-old Omar Moreno. Deputies used spike strips, a SWAT response and tear gas before the chase ended.

U-Haul trucks have figured in other county theft cases as well. In June, two suspects were found with hundreds of pieces of stolen mail inside a U-Haul in northwest Harris County, and a third suspect was identified but not arrested. The new Katy Freeway case remains open, with deputies still searching for the second suspect and any property linked to the burglary.
