ICE agents fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in east Houston after a morning enforcement operation in the 6800 block of Canal Street near Wayside Drive sent federal and local officers into the East End. The shooting drew a heavy scene in Magnolia Park, one of the city’s busiest industrial and neighborhood corridors.
Houston Fire Department crews were dispatched about 6:30 a.m. to a shooting call at the Canal Street address. Araujo had been shot in the right flank and abdomen area, and he was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident began as a targeted enforcement operation aimed at arresting a man the agency said was living in the country unlawfully. Araujo rammed an ICE vehicle, refused multiple commands and then tried to run over an agent, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. ICE identified the man killed as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General is handling the shooting investigation, while FBI Houston is reviewing the alleged assault on a federal officer. Three other people were detained at the scene, and investigators preserved the block between Canal Street and Wayside Drive.
Family members disputed ICE’s version of events and said Araujo had lived in the United States for nearly 35 years. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, said on social media that Araujo worked in construction and supported his family. Houston-area leaders and the League of United Latin American Citizens called for an independent investigation.
