Rice police search for Jordanian athlete missing after Houston arrival

Rice University police were searching for Rabe'e Ata Juma'a Alqaq, a 24-year-old Jordanian soccer player who disappeared within hours of arriving in Houston for the Genuine Cup. The FBI joined the search as officers asked the public for help locating him.

Alqaq had traveled to Houston to take part in the Genuine Cup, a soccer tournament for athletes with intellectual disabilities. He arrived with the team around 9 p.m. Saturday, then was last seen around midnight after leaving Martel College, where he had been staying with others connected to the event.

The disappearance put Rice University police at the center of a rapidly unfolding case tied to a campus housing site and an international sports event. Martel College, one of Rice’s residential colleges, became the key location in the timeline as investigators tried to trace Alqaq’s movements after he left the building.

The Genuine Cup describes itself as a global tournament advancing inclusion through sport, and its Houston 2026 schedule began July 27. That made the missing-athlete case especially sensitive for organizers and law enforcement, because the player was a recent arrival far from home and had been in Houston only a short time before he was reported missing.

The search also highlighted the role university police can play in Harris County when visitors are routed through campus housing and nearby facilities. Rice University police were the public face of the effort, with federal agents later brought in as the case expanded beyond the campus perimeter.

For Houston, the case carried a practical public-safety concern: a visitor from Jordan disappeared almost immediately after reaching the city for a tournament built around inclusion and participation. The urgent search centered on a narrow window of time, a specific place on the Rice campus, and a young athlete whose whereabouts remained the focus of local and federal authorities.
