Hazmat crews respond after transformers fall from 18-wheeler in Cy-Fair

Westbound US-290 at Eldridge was shut down for the next few hours after an overturned 18-wheeler spilled fuel and sent five people to local hospitals in stable condition, while Harris County HAZMAT also responded in Cy-Fair after two large transformers fell from another truck. Cy-Fair Fire Department said in an “ACCIDENT UPDATE” post that county hazmat crews were on scene to help mitigate the fuel spill.

Cy-Fair Fire Department confirmed the transformer incident and coordinated the cleanup in the northwest Harris County area. The department said the fallen transformers came off an 18-wheeler, adding another heavy-truck response to a corridor that already sees frequent freight traffic.

The fire department serves Northwest Harris County across a 164-square-mile area, and it says it is one of the largest and busiest combination fire departments in the United States, with more than 26,000 emergency responses each year. That local footprint matters when a truck load goes wrong on a major route like US-290, where one wreck can quickly turn into a road closure, a spill response and an ambulance run.

Harris County’s Fire Marshal’s Office says its Hazardous Materials Response Team was created after the events of Sept. 11, 2001 as part of the county’s emergency response capabilities. The team’s presence in Cy-Fair showed how quickly a freight crash can move beyond a tow truck call and into a coordinated hazmat operation.

The Eldridge crash was not the first time a big rig had snarled that stretch of northwest Harris County. A previous overturned big-rig wreck near US-290 and Eldridge also left five people hospitalized, reinforcing how often heavy truck incidents on that corridor can affect traffic, emergency crews and nearby neighborhoods at the same time.
